Spotlight on a GreenED Champion

Published by RCEM Comms on

Derriford ED is adopting some novel approaches to improving sustainability. Dr Daisy Stevens, GreenED lead in Plymouth explains more…

What is going well in your department?

Our GreenED team continues to grow as more people hear about our projects. So far we have: ACPs, Admin staff, Doctors, ENPs HCAs, House Keepers, IT staff, Managers, Nurses, Porters, Pharmacists and Sustainability Support Managers as core members of the team.

Any key successes you would like to showcase?

Our department has introduced Blood Gas syringes without a preloaded needle. We found that many of our samples were taken with other blood tests or during cannulation and that this needle was being thrown away without being used. This new product will reduce the amount of needles purchased and the unnecessary sharps waste, whilst saving the department money. It is anticipated that we could save £20,000 annually with this change. We have also reduced the brightness of our computer screens within the department to 50%. A staff survey has shown that most people did not notice the change, and if they did, they found it better for their eyes.

Any other benefits of running GreenED in your department?

One of the most rewarding benefits of GreenED is that it has united our staff towards a common goal. There are many individuals who have worked hard in their personal and professional lives fighting climate change. They have now been empowered to take on projects they are passionate about with the support of RCEM. We have also made it accessible to those who are new to sustainability by making small changes such as turning computers and lights off when not in use.

How have you found the experience as GreenED departmental lead?

It has been an incredibly rewarding experience. In less than 12 months we have visible improvements within our department. Physical changes as well as changes in staff attitude leading to carbon and financial savings. It has not been all plain sailing, with red tape hurdles and barriers along the way but our successes make every effort worth it.
